Silica dust is invisible at the levels that harm you most, which is why the first rule to prevent silicosis is to stop guessing. If you cut, grind, drill, or sweep concrete, stone, or sand, respirable crystalline silica is in the air, and inside lungs it creates scar tissue that never heals. The good news: prevention is practical. With the right plan, controls, and products, crews can work hard without paying for it later.

Start before the first cut. Identify tasks that generate dust and stage them when fewer people are present. Use written procedures, restricted zones, and “clean/dirty” pathways so dust doesn’t follow boots into break areas or offices. Swap processes where possible (precast parts, off-site cutting) and choose materials with lower silica content when that won’t compromise the job.

At the Source

Engineering controls beat guesswork every time. Use water-fed saws and drills so fewer particles go airborne, or capture dust at the blade with a tight-fitting shroud and HEPA vacuum. Keep hoses intact, water tanks filled, and filters changed; small lapses undo big gains. For housekeeping, skip dry sweeping and leaf blowers; use HEPA vacuums and damp methods so settled fine particles don’t take flight again.

Monitoring, PPE, and Training

Measure when you’re unsure, objective data tells you if controls are working. Train crews to recognize high-risk tasks, maintain equipment, and learn the difference between visible debris and the fine respirable particles that stay suspended for hours. When exposures can’t be engineered down, issue properly fitted respirators and keep up with medical surveillance for at-risk workers.

Prevent Silicosis the Easy Way: NeSilex

Plain water helps, but it leaves too much fine silica in the air. NeSilex is a high-dilution dust suppressant that makes water “wetter,” so droplets wrap and trap particles right where they form. Add a small dose to your tool’s existing water feed and you’ll reduce airborne silica significantly, without extra vacuums, power, or specialized attachments. For cleanup, NeSilex Blue binds floor dust during sweeping so it can’t re-aerosolize. That combination gives foremen a fast path to consistent, documented control: simpler than ventilation rigs, cleaner than plain water, and far more comfortable than relying on respirators alone.

Bottom line: To prevent silicosis, plan the task, control dust at the source, verify, and train. NeSilex ties those steps together by turning the water system you already have into a top-tier control—making prevention the easiest part of your day.
